The evolution of multihull motor yachts

Raising the bar for multihull motor yachts

In 2005, Sunreef Yachts was a young company quickly gaining recognition for its quality craftsmanship and cutting-edge yacht designs, most notably the introduction of the world’s first oceangoing luxury catamaran with a flybridge.  At the time, the shipyard was only manufacturing sailing catamarans, but when the famous late sailor Laurent Bourgnon approached company Founder and President, Francis Lapp to build a transatlantic powerboat, Sunreef Yachts stepped up to the challenge.

Wanting nothing more than for his “children to discover the world as a family, from a nautical perspective” aboard a motor yacht that was easy to operate, eco-friendly, safe, spacious, and comfortable, Bourgnon came to believe that a power catamaran would be the perfect fit for this endeavor.  Sunreef Yachts was confident it could bring Laurent’s vision to life, and not by simply modifying its existing range of sail models, but by creating something revolutionary.

In 2008, the 70 Sunreef Power debuted, marking a new era for Sunreef Yachts.  Bourgnon’s custom Expedition version, named Jambo, became the world’s first double deck power catamaran with oceanic range.  Capable of cruising long distances with low fuel consumption while taking style and comfort to levels never seen before on a power catamaran, the model proved to be a success.

Not only did Jambo provide an incredibly smooth and comfortable cruising experience with the spaciousness of a much larger yacht, the first power catamaran from Sunreef Yachts was an achievement in green yacht design.  Fitted with options that included optimized engines, solar panels, wind-propelled alternators, and non-toxic antifouling, the yacht remarkably reached a range over 10000 nautical miles when cruising at 8 knots.  Unsurprisingly, the 70 Sunreef Power model piqued the interest of many. Clients looking to build the 70 Sunreef Power were given the flexibility to select custom layout arrangements, quality finishes, and furnishings, working directly with the Sunreef Yachts in-house design team as a collaborative effort.  There was space to incorporate a jacuzzi, you could add a jet ski crane, or even enclose the flybridge.  Options were endless, and the bar was officially raised.  With nothing comparable in the market, the model quickly became a bestseller, leading to the introduction of the 60 Sunreef Power.

The Next Generation of Power Catamarans

In August 2019, a completely updated Sunreef motor catamaran – the 80 Sunreef Power, premiered at the annual Cannes Yachting Festival.  The fully customizable model which responded to demand for bigger and more spacious luxury multihulls, became the largest motor yacht built by Sunreef Yachts.  Sporting a nearly 40 foot beam with over 3,800 square feet of living space (an additional 1300 square feet compared to its 70’ predecessor), it achieves the interior volume of a traditional monohull that is 30% longer in length with deck areas similar to those seen on a 150’ yacht.  With multiple units on order, including one scheduled to be delivered to superstar tennis player Rafael Nadal later this year and an Eco version currently underway, the model is demonstrating vast appeal.

Next to join the lineup, were the 60 Sunreef Power and 70 Sunreef Power models, boasting 2700 square feet (250m²) and 3200 square feet (300m²) of living space, respectively. Continuing the legacy of the shipyard’s innovative power catamaran design, they offer generous volumes within the hulls that can be easily customized to match any navigation plan and lifestyle.

As on the 80, each model is equipped with a hydraulic platform to store a tender and a spacious aft garage for water toys.  While new to the range, the first 70 Sunreef Power was just commissioned and a 60 Sunreef Power is already in production, both were ordered by repeat customers. Today, Sunreef Yachts’ motor yachts enter the world of megayacht design, hinting at what’s to come.  In a period spanning under a year, the shipyard has signed three orders for yachts 100’ and over in length: a 100 Sunreef Power, a 110 Sunreef Power, and what is set to be the most voluminous luxury catamaran ever launched and the biggest superyacht made in Poland – the audacious 49 M Sunreef Power.
